Prof. Jacek Majchrowski – lawyer, Professor of Uniwersytet Jagielloński (Jagiellonian University), full Professor of Law Sciences, historian of political and legal doctrines. A specialist in the field of the Second Republic of Poland, documenting its history, particularly the activities of right-wing parties. Deputy Chairman of the State Tribunal (2001-2005) and judge of the Tribunal until November 2011. Jacek Majchrowski was born on the 13th of January, 1947, in Sosnowiec. His life has been bound up with Krakow, and his professional career – with the Jagiellonian University. He graduated from the University in 1970. In 1974 he was granted the „Doktor” title (Ph.D.) by the Law and Administration Department, in 1978 he defended his post-doctoral thesis („habilitacja”), and in 1988, as one of the youngest scholars in the history of Jagiellonian University, he obtained the title of „Profesor nadzwyczajny nauk prawnych” (Associate Professor of Law Sciences). He held the position of the Dean of the Department of Law and Administration from 1987 through 1993. From 1996 through 1997, when Professor Jacek Majchrowski was holding the office of Voivode of Krakow (Head of the Krakow Region), he was instrumental in e.g. creating a Special Economic Zone in Krakow and signing a preliminary agreement on building the Multifunctional Center (Centrum Koncertowo-Kongresowe). He saved the „Teatr Stu” Theatre from liquidation. Moreover, he brought about the transfer of the Soviet soldiers’ graves from the Krakow Planty ring to the Rakowicki Cemetery, which put an end to a sharp conflict that had led to public demonstrations on numerous occasions. Member of the SLD (Democratic Left Alliance) party since 1999, Professor Majchrowski suspended his membership for the time of the presidential campaign. Member of Polskie Towarzystwo Historyczne (Polish Historical Society), Polskie Towarzystwo Nauk Politycznych (Polish Political Science Association) and of many foreign scientific societies, including the elite Associazione degli Storici Europei. Vice President of the Association of the Polish Cities since March 2011. Co-President of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), elected on 7th December in Paris. Deputy Chairman of Społeczny Komitet Odnowy Zabytków Krakowa (Civic Committee for Restoration of KrakowHeritage). Doctor Honoris Causa of University of Bordeaux and Pedagogical University in Krakow. Honorary Citizen of Sosnowiec. Chevalier of the National Order of the Legion of Honour of the Republic of France. Prof. Jacek Majchrowski is the author of many scientific studies and 14 history books, mainly on the Second Republic of Poland. His last book is „Pierwsza Kompania Kadrowa – portret oddziału” (The First Cadre Company – Portrait of a Military Unit), just published by Księgarnia Akademicka. Married, with two sons, two grandchildren.
